Brand Radar is the practical starting point for a lot of teams, for one unglamorous reason: they already pay for it.

## The short answer

> **Ahrefs Brand Radar** adds AI visibility tracking to an SEO suite: how often your brand appears in AI answers, and which of your pages get cited, next to the keyword and backlink tooling. **Armature** measures whether a coding agent installs your product, by running Claude Code, Codex and Cursor on real tasks inside realistic repositories.

## What Brand Radar does well

- **It is already in the budget.** No new vendor, no new procurement, no new login. That is worth more than most feature comparisons admit.
- **It sits next to the rest of the data.** AI mentions in the same place as rankings, backlinks and the site audit. When something moves, you can see what else moved.
- **The crawl and index infrastructure is real.** Ahrefs has been crawling the web for a long time, and the citation data benefits from that.
- **It is competent.** For tracking whether your brand shows up in AI answers, it does the job.

## Where it is a looser fit

It was built for content sites and brands. A developer tool's problems are shaped differently:

- The pages that matter are documentation, not marketing pages.
- The queries that matter are configuration and limits questions, not head terms.
- The buyer that matters is increasingly not a person at all.

None of that is a defect. It is a product built for a different job.

## Side by side

| | Ahrefs Brand Radar | Armature |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Surface measured | Chat assistants answering people | Coding agents installing software |
| The test | Prompts and observed AI answers | A real agent working in a real repository |
| Output | Brand mentions, citations, share of voice | Install share, plus the reason for every loss |
| Includes a codebase | No | Yes |
| Ends in running code | No | Yes |
| Built for | Content sites and brands | Developer tools |
| Delivery | A module in an SEO suite | A service with a growth engineer, plus self-serve analytics and evals |
| Price | Included in the suite | From $5,000 per month |

## Why the two numbers move independently

A chat visibility score cannot see the things that decide a coding agent's choice, because the test contains none of them.

**The repository.** The same hosted database request produced one winner in 111 of 111 JavaScript sessions and 48 of 132 TypeScript sessions. Same words, different file extension.

**The incumbent.** A sentence in a repository file naming a preferred product was followed 16 times out of 18, and lost 2 times out of 3 once a rival library was installed in the same repository.

**The agent.** Claude Code, Codex and Cursor named different category leaders in 10 of the 18 categories we measured.

**Whether the agent looks at all.** Claude Code ran a web search in 1.6% of decision runs. For those sessions, no citation and no mention could have reached it.

## Which to use

**Brand Radar if** you already pay for Ahrefs and you want a baseline for the chat surface this afternoon. It is the right first move and it costs nothing extra.

**Armature if** coding agents install products in your category without a person comparing vendors, and you want to know your install share, split by agent, language and persona, plus what lost the sessions you lost.

**Both, in that order,** for most developer tool companies. Turn on the free thing you already have. Then measure the surface it cannot see.

## The one thing worth doing before either

Run 300 coding agent sessions yourself. Three repositories that look like your users' projects, ten requests written as symptoms rather than category names, five runs each with Claude Code and Codex.

A few hundred dollars in tokens and a weekend. If agents are installing your competitors while no human compares anything, you have found where your market is going, and no amount of brand tracking would have shown you.

## Common questions

### What is Ahrefs Brand Radar?

An AI visibility module inside the Ahrefs SEO suite. It tracks how often a brand appears in AI answers and which pages are cited, alongside the classic keyword, backlink and site audit tooling, at no extra cost beyond the suite subscription.

### Is Brand Radar enough for a developer tool company?

It covers the chat surface, and if you already pay for Ahrefs it is the cheapest way to start. It does not measure a coding agent installing software inside a repository, which for many developer tools is the larger surface.

### Should I buy a dedicated GEO tool instead of Brand Radar?

Only if the extra depth changes a decision. Dedicated platforms cover more engines and offer real user session data. If you are not yet acting on the numbers you have, more numbers will not help.

### How does Armature differ?

It runs Claude Code, Codex and Cursor on real tasks inside realistic repositories and records which product each installs. The output is install share, not brand mentions, and it comes with a growth engineer rather than a dashboard.
